Fauna
The specific character and compostion of the species within the Karkonosze fauna result from climatic conditions, vegetation and human economic activities in the past.
The invertebrates fauna is described by at least 15000 species. Examples of the numerous alpine-boreal species are molluscs like Vertigo alpestris, insects like brown pine bark beetle, and leaf beetles Gonioctena intermedia and Asioresta femorata.
The vertebrates fauna includes more than 320 species: Fish- 2 species, Amphibians- 6 species, Reptiles- 6 species, Birds- some 200 species and Mammals- almost 60 species. The species with the largest population are red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), mouflon (Ovis musimon), fox (Vulpes vulpes), pine martens (Martes martes) and bats.
Some given examples of birds are the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), nuthatch (genus Sitta), chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), tengmalm’s owl (Aegolius funereus), black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) and hedge sparrow (Prunella modularis).
Reptiles are represented by the common lizard (Lacerta vivipara), sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) and blind worm (Anguis fragilis).
A typical representative of the amphibian group is the alpine newt (Mesotriton alpestris). Furthermore, the Park is an habitat for a quite huge population of smooth newt (Triturus vulgaris).
